EU Perspectives Podcast on Migration, Democracy and Unity

Brussels, 18.3.2025

“Migration remains the one pain point we haven’t managed to resolve with a final system that works for everyone,” said Katarína Cséfalvayová, Director of ICE, in the EU Perspectives podcast.

The latest episode of the EU Perspectives podcast explored the critical challenges of migration, rule of law, and European democracy. Featuring Katarína Cséfalvayová, alongside MEPs Tomáš Zdechovský and Lukas Mandl, and other experts, Camille Le Coz (Director of Migration Policy Institute Europe) and Başak Yavçan (Head of Research of the Migration Policy Group), the discussion underscored the urgency of unified migration policies.

Dr. Cséfalvayová emphasized that migration remains a key issue despite the absence of recent large-scale influxes. She highlighted how adversaries exploit migration as a divisive topic within the EU, urging unity to counter disinformation campaigns and hybrid threats. She also stressed the importance of restoring citizens’ trust in EU migration policies, advocating for rational solutions to address loopholes and inefficiencies.

The European Commission’s proposed Common European System for Returns aims to streamline return processes and enhance cooperation among member states. While some participants expressed optimism about the proposal’s potential, others raised concerns about its feasibility and human rights implications.

The debate also touched on the shifting global landscape, with Dr. Cséfalvayová warning of potential future refugee waves due to geopolitical instability and climate migration. She called for preparedness and a solid system of migration and asylum management to address these challenges effectively.
